The leather scene in Chennai is as vibrant as its filter coffee. While a lot of Tamil Nadu leather firms sell to high-end and luxury brands, their names are frequently hidden by Non Disclosure Agreements.
Fortunately, several of the city's indigenous companies have developed their own collections utilising locally sourced quality leather in recent years. As a result, we now have a slew of leather labels selling high-quality Made in Tamil Nadu handbags, shoes, and clothing, frequently with the same colour palette and trends as Europe.
Imran Pasha's family has been involved in the leather industry for over 40 years. He collaborates with Eastern European designers who frequently demand unusual finishes. He found he was achieving finishes he hadn't seen previously when manufacturing small batches of leather for the Bulgarian and Austrian markets.
That's when he decided to launch Myon in the Indian market. "We are attempting to transform our long-standing corporate tradition into a young, edgy, experimental offering." "We provide a peek of that in our works for the market here while I produce colours for the following season in Europe," explains Imran.
Myon's first collection, which debuted in May of this year, contains bags with sophisticated flower designs. "When you think of leather, you think of browns, beiges, blacks, and distressed or smooth finishes." It's strange to think of leather in flowers, embossed designs, metallics, and magnificent colours," adds Imran, adding that this is precisely what they offer to the table, in addition to responding to requests for leather furnishings. There is so much more that leather can do: this is the thought process that drives the majority of new businesses today. Add the magic phrase "customisation" to the mix, and you've got yourself an audience.
Goodbye, beach bags, and welcome, stylish alternatives to our drab workplace totes. Rectangular-shaped briefcase-inspired handbags have stolen the focus from the easygoing, crochet bags we use every summer, thanks to labels like Miu Miu, Khaite, Prada, and others. What's the best part? You can fit your laptop inside depending on the size you choose, sparing you from having to lug about a simple canvas bag to and from work.

"When I show them the possibilities, they are startled, from bright pink and brilliant green to pastels." "Any colour you see on cloth can be done in leather," says Kripesh Ram, who founded Urai in April 2022 with his sister Varshene Kripa. Their Perungudi workshop is a riot of brilliant colours, with active hands assembling leather outfits like as skirts, shorts, pants, and accessories. Their customers frequently want custom-made coats with their own creative input. They sometimes want their clothing to appear like what superstars wear.
Hyde Studio, another Chennai-based firm that specialises in bags, is no stranger to similar demands. Clients occasionally request that they reproduce designs from other brands. "That is something we don't do, even though our USP is customisation," Ramya, who has been running the brand with her husband Hari Madhavan since 2016, says, adding that the brand is happy to design something from scratch or even create a product according to the client's instructions, but never a rip-off. Hyde Studio offers an extensive online collection filled with clean, minimalist designs for purses, totes, slings, wallets, baby bags, and laptop bags.
Though Balenciaga's neon Le Cagole bags are losing popularity, the style in general—particularly in more neutral colours like black and white—isn't going anywhere. Indeed, it has resulted in an increase in demand for lavishly adorned purses adorned with a variety of buckles, clasps, and clips. And, with so many alternatives, we'll almost likely have to give up a few old favourites in the process. Handy belt bags haven't been fresh in a few seasons, so buckle bags it is till a designer revamps them again.

These can be customised further. "For example, if a left-handed user wants the zipper to go from left to right, we can accomplish that as well," Ramya says. The bags take between one and three days to make, depending on the size and complexity. "The workshop is a wonderful mess," she adds, explaining the process. "It begins with pattern creation, followed by selecting the appropriate leather for that design." Following that, the pattern is cut, and we begin assembling components and working on the lining. The bag is then sewn, and we choose how we want the edges to look. "After completion, the bag is quality tested and wrapped." All of their bags are manufactured to order.
