Review Of The 1995 Gucci Horsebit Shoulder Bag

A versatile bag that is worth purchasing in several hues.

Gucci's Horsebit 1955 shoulder bag is a favorite of Tried & True's editors. The bag has two interior pockets and a zipper compartment. The leather has a bit of sheen and gives an elevated effect while also not scuffing or scratching easily. It's wear-to-anything-and-everywhere-piece that manages to still feel special.

Every woman in her 30s reaches a point in her life when she evaluates the lovely things she has gathered over the years. When everything is spread out in front of you, whether it be purses or jewellery, it is easy to see which items are the most coveted. I recently did this with my collection of the former in preparation for a significant relocation, and I came away with the conviction that for my daily life, there was only one bag that truly reigned supreme: the Gucci Horsebit 1955 Shoulder Bag.

I want to start out by saying that I am not a fan of logomania. I am aware of and respect other people’s aesthetics, but when it comes to my own tastes, I prefer things that are a little more subtle. For my tastes, this classy purse with its recognisable yet understated gold horsebit buckle is ideal. And to be honest, I got it as a present about two years ago (it wasn’t from Gucci, but it was still a gift), and I love it so much that I’ve thought about getting it in another colour.

Even though the stunning camel colour I own is currently sold out, I find myself considering purchasing it in black. I also never purchase black bags! Before I had my go-to carryall, I would have told myself, “You have one black purse, and that’s enough.” I’m here to admit that I was mistaken! The versatility of this purse is enough to stand on its own. How about the dark version? It simply looks incredibly shiny and sophisticated.

But let’s get back to the adaptability I mentioned. The somewhat sheened and raised impression of the rough leather is enhanced by the fact that it resists scuffing and scratches readily.

The horsebit on the front and the two on either side of the straps are essentially the only decorative flourishes on the garment, and they are more than sufficient. It has a small touch to ensure that it feels distinctive, but it doesn’t shout at you. The flap, too? Game-changer.

No more using one hand to struggle with a clasp or zipper. After you close the flap, you can easily reach in and out without having to worry about your items being thrown around because it is securely closed.

Did I mention that you can fit a lot in your bag thanks to the two internal pockets and the zippered compartment? And even when it’s stuffed full, it maintains its structure. But maybe most crucially, the bag functions whether I’m dressed formally or casually.

It looks wonderful with jeans and a t-shirt but is also appropriate for an evening out with a dress. Every time I drape it over my shoulder, it manages to feel special despite being a piece that can be worn everywhere and with anything.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of shoulder straps, the Horsebit 1955’s is adjustable, allowing for crossbody wear as well. It truly is a bag for all occasions and future years.

The horsebit is a piece of exquisite hardware that has been around since 1955, when it first debuted on a handbag.
